Share Our Strength is Seeking Volunteers!

I'm a huge supporter of Share Our Strength, a national non-profit organization dedicated to ending childhood hunger and providing children and their families with education about healthy eating. Their No Kid Hungry campaign has officially landed in New York City, and this Saturday, July 16, Share Our Strength seeks volunteers to help with a Outreach Day to raise awareness about their cause.

Share Our Strength hopes to gather 150 volunteers across Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx to distribute promotional materials like postcards, banners, and advertisements about where families can find free meals this summer as a part of the Summer Meals program.

To find more information about participating in Share Our Strength's Outreach Day at New York Rescue Mission, visit their website or their Facebook event. You can also follow them on Twitter at their account @ShareStength and join the #NoKidHungry conversation.

I hope you consider volunteering for this amazing cause!

Food and Philanthropy: Share Our Strength

Food and Philanthropy

This is the first in a series of profiles on food and philanthropy organizations. Are you involved with a great organization that supports food? Email us at

The first organization we're profiling is Share Our Strength. I recently participated in Share Our Strength's Taste of the Nation in New York City. For more information on this fantastic organization keep reading!

Combating childhood hunger has always been an important goal within America today, but Share Our Strength, a national non-profit organization focusing on childhood hunger, takes this initiative one step further by not only providing kids with the food they need, but also equipping them and their families with the essential tools for living and eating healthfully.

What does Share Our Strength Do?

Through the four-fold No Kid Hungry strategy, focusing on creating joint ventures to plan comprehensible yet doable solutions for ending child hunger at the city and state levels, boosting public awareness, providing grants to community-centric organizations that work to improve food access and education and directly educating children and their families about healthy and affordable eating. Share Our Strength also participates in improving already existing programs, such as SNAP, WIC and various school lunch and after-school snack programs, that are effecting change in the fight against childhood hunger.

In just 2010 alone, Share Our Strength has endowed 284 non-profit organizations with grants to support their nutritious eating initiatives, meaning just over 4.5 million dollars put towards ending child hunger.

How Can To Get Involved

With extensive programming and many accessible volunteer opportunities, getting involved with Share Our Strength, on any level, is straightforward and simple. The easiest way to get involved is by joining the over 40,000 people who have taken the No Kid Hungry pledge, adding your efforts to the nationwide movement dedicated to ending childhood hunger by 2015 in the U.S.

Taste of the Nation

Additionally, Share Our Strength's Taste of the Nation benefit is a great way to experience fine American dining with premier, award-winning chefs while raising awareness for childhood hunger and taking the necessary steps to ensure that no child grows up hungry. Red Rooster Harlem participated this year, and it was a pleasure to be involved with this great organization. Check out pictures here.

Volunteer with Cooking Matters

On a more educational level, Share Our Strength's Cooking Matters enlists volunteer nutrition and culinary specialists to guide kids and their families toward making affordable and healthy meal choices, providing them with skills, confidence and most importantly nourishment.

Photos from Share Our Strength's Taste of the Nation

Last night's Taste of the Nation event for Share Our Strength was fantastic.  The food was incredible, and it was great to join together with so many amazing chefs to support the cause of fighting childhood hunger.  We served Chilled Callalou Soup with Crabmeat and Melon at Red Rooster's table.  It looked great next to the vibrant Rooster decor.

The event was buzzing with restaurant professionals, chefs, media, and food-lovers, making it a really fun scene for anyone there. Check out photos from last night below.
