Recipes for Memorial Day

It's not too late to plan an impromptu Memorial Day get together! Here are some easy ideas for edible additions to your holiday.

Aside from grilling hamburgers and hot dogs, why not throw a few vegetarian ingredients on the grill? Not only do they have less calories than a beef patty, but portobello burgers have great flavor and pair well with all the normal burger toppings like tomatoes, cheese, lettuce, and homemade condiments.

If the weather's nice, it could be a great opportunity to make some quick Prosciutto and Cheese Sandwiches and gather friends for a picnic. If you prepare a batch of iced tea and a container full of fruit salad, you'll have a meal ready to go within an hour.

For dessert, make some good old-fashioned American favorites such as Chocolate Chip Cookies or a Piled-High Apple Pie.

Spiked Watermelon Recipe for Memorial Day BBQ

Get Fit for Summer!

Memorial Day may not be the official start date of summer, but it is a great occasion to celebrate warm weather with treats like Spiked Watermelon. Summer is a great time to enjoy fresh produce, especially in the company of friends and family. The best part about this boozy treat is how easy it is to make. Literally, all you need is a bottle of vodka, a watermelon, and a knife!

One oversight of the geniuses behind the seedless watermelon is a texture that is not very compatible with alcohol absorption, so this will work better with a variety that has seeds.

Unlike ingredients such as cheese, coffee, or chocolate, this is a great time to buy an inexpensive bottle of vodka, because the fruit will mask any flavor from high-end alcohol. If you need guidance to choose the juiciest watermelon, follow these tips to make sure you choose a ripe one.

Spiked Watermelon Recipe

1 bottle (750ml) of vodka 1 watermelon with seeds, 10 lb or larger

Cut a plug out of the watermelon that is as wide as the neck of the vodka bottle and 2 to 3 inches deep. Save the plug and set aside. Fit the neck of the bottle into the watermelon and pour the vodka inside emptying it's contents. Replug the watermelon and chill in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 hours. Slice the watermelon and serve.
