New NYC Initiative Will Help Small Food Businesses Grow and Create Jobs

In a time when jobs can still be hard to come by after the financial crisis, its amazing to see what the City of New York is doing to try to boost work possibilities in the food industry.  A recent New York Times article detailed a plan announced by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and the City Council speaker, Christine C. Quinn, which will put $1 million into $10 million loan pool-the rest of the money coming from the Goldman Sachs investment bank. This money will be used to jumpstart a program to, among other things, help secure space for kitchens and small-company processing plants and help encourage the growth of food-makers and their companies in New York City.

This is a great step in the right direction by Mayor Bloomberg. This will help to create a lot of jobs in New York City and keep them here. Also, many of the jobs that will be created will be ones that can be performed even if there is a language barrier. That means that new immigrants will have an easier time getting a job in the city.

Even with a decline in other businesses, the food-making market has remained strong and even grown lately. This initiative to help the food-makers will only make the industry better and stronger in the years to come.

There are already a few tangible actions contained within this plan that are very exciting. The Economic Development Corporation is overhauling certain spaces, like the former Federal Building in Sunset Park, Brooklyn so that they can better fit light food making companies. The EDC is also looking for ways to best handle the $10 million in loans in order to help grow some of the smaller up-and-coming companies. Efforts like this to help smaller companies survive will help everyone in the city.

One of my goals when opening Red Rooster was to build on Harlem's rich culinary culture and unite people from all over Harlem to be proud of their neighborhood. But besides that, I also wanted people to be proud of Harlem and to be able to work near their homes in the neighborhood. I've always been passionate about creating local jobs and supporting the local community, so I'm glad to see that this is something that is happening throughout the rest of the city.

Though it's still such a new project, I am very excited to see where this is going and to see what kind of opportunities could come from Mayor Bloomberg's new initiative.
