The Four Best BPA-free Reusable Water Bottles for Summer

Summer is the season for hiking, biking, camping, and generally being more active outside. Being active also means drinking more water, which is easier when you have a sturdy water bottle to take with you on fun adventures.  It's important to stay hydrated in warm weather and while exercising, so if you usually reach for an energy drink,, try one of these five ways to make your tap water taste great. Some water bottles contain the harmful chemical BPA, and recent research shows that BPA may have more damaging effects than we once thought. So how do you know the best refillable water bottle to choose?

BPA, or Bisphenol-A, is chemical ingredient used in the plastic that lines many food containers, including regular plastic water bottles and some reusable water bottles. Intake of BPA has been linked to a variety of health concerns, including heart disease, cancer, and fertility issues. Nine states in the US have banned BPA in plastic baby bottles, but many other plastic bottles are still manufactured using the chemical.

Reusable water bottles are the best way to avoid ingesting BPA, plus they're much better for the environment than plastic water bottles. Lots of them also come with cool accessories or features that will make them portable for all of your adventures this summer. Here's a list of some great BPA-free choices:

Sigg - Sigg bottles, made in Switzerland since 1908, feature their BPA-free EcoLiner, which doesn't leach any chemicals or transfer any taste or odor to the liquid inside the bottle. The outside of the bottle is made from either aluminum or stainless steel, depending on the design. They also offer accessories like a sport cap and an insulating sleeve to keep beverages cold on a summer road trip.

Kleen Kanteen - These bottles are made from 100% stainless steel and were the first all-metal, BPA-free water bottle on the market. They are available in a variety of sizes and colors - you can even get a Kleen Kanteen wine carafe. Accessories include a carabiner for hiking, bike cages for toting along on cycling trips, and a water filter adapter.

Camelbak - Camelbak offers some great sport-focused water bottles, some constructed from BPA-free plastic and some from stainless steel. They feature a spill-proof cap with a specially designed Bite-Valve that opens when you bite down and sip - there's no need to tilt the bottle back. This makes Camelbak a great option for long-distance runners, bikers, and hikers. They also have a hands-free pack option; you simply sip the water from a tube attached to the pack!

Vapur - The Vapur bottle is perfect for summer travel and camping because it actually folds up! It's made from flexible but durable BPA-free plastic, it's washable, it can be frozen to use as an ice pack, and it comes with a carabiner to attach it to your belt loop or backpack while you're enjoying the great outdoors.
