New Fall Restaurant Openings

Chefs and restaurateurs from all over the globe dream of opening a restaurant in New York City's amazing food scene. This autumn is no different. Here is a list (previously featured in the New York Times) of new, up-and-coming restaurants from both foreigners and locals, all of which are trying to redefine their cuisine through innovation and classical reinvention.

South of 14th Street


Aamanns/Copenhagen: October. 13 Laight Street (Varick Street), TriBeCa.

Adam Aamann-Christensen will be opening up a 35-seat rendition of his open-face sandwich restaurant in Copenhagen along with plenty of other Danish cuisine.

Barraca: October. 81 Greenwich Avenue, and 2 Bank Street, Greenwich Village.

Hector Sanz and Maximo Tejada, the owners of Rayuela and Macondo on the Lower East Side have created this casual spot (Barraca) with tapas and paella its forte. Its sister restaurant, Melibea, will specialize in Spanish regional foods with guest chefs in a more gracious setting.

Corkbuzz Wine Studio: Mid-October. 13 East 13th Street,(Fifth Avenue), Greenwich Village.

Laura Maniec will feature all things wine, complete with wine-inspired foods, and classes.

Empellon Cocina: November. 105 First Avenue (Sixth Street), East Village.

Say goodbye to tacos; say hello to home-style Mexican cuisine by Alex Stupak. For those indecisive customers, it will also feature a tasting menu.

Veselka Bowery: October. 9 East First Street (Bowery), East Village.

The owner, Tom Birchard, needed a better space than his original restaurant (Veselka) to showcase his diverse Ukrainian menu, vodkas, and Eastern European drinks.


Between 14th and 60th Street

Al Mayass: October. 24 East 21st Street, Flatiron District

An extremely popular restaurant from Beirut, Al Mayass will showcase its interpretations of Armenian cuisine.

Clyde's: December. 505 West 37th Street, Midtown.

David Waltuck will have to tackle the genre of "sports bar" with genius zeal to pull off his blend of high-quality cuisine with the simplicity and directness of bar food. He will showcase versions of cheese steaks and a Reuben with homemade corned beef.

Morso Cafe: Late September. 420 East 59th Street (First Avenue), Midtown.

This regional Italian restaurant with a Tuscan focus will be run by Chef Timothy Ryan. He was formerly with Bouley, Picholine, and Le Cirque.

Romera: September. Dream Downtown Hotel; 355 West 16th Street, Chelsea.

Miguel Sanchez Romera closed L'Esguard, his Michelin-starred restaurant in Barcelona, to bring his unique combination of neurology and gastronomy to New York. Romera will feature elaborate tasting menus of 11 courses for $245 a pop.

North of 60th Street

Crown: September. 24 East 81st. Street, Upper East Side.

Brimming with velvet, this classy restaurant by John DeLucie has vintage sets the mood with vintage artwork while Jason Hall, formerly of Gotham Bar and Grill, serves up Champagne vichyssoise, sirloin of veal with Madeira, and Atlantic halibut en papillote with herbs.

Loi Restaurant: Late September. 208 West 70th Street, Upper West Side.

Formerly Compass, Loi Restaurant is now the brain child of Maria Loi, a Greek chef and restaurateur.



Basik: September. 323 Graham Avenue, Williamsburg.

Though focused on the drink, the "shabby chic" menu by chef Ryan Jordan of Breslin and the John Dory will feature farmers market ingredients served on an outdoor patio.

Red Gravy: November. 151 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn Heights.

This new Italian restaurant will have a seasonally focused menu with a Southern Italian feel.

Talde: October. 369 Seventh Avenue (11th Street), Park Slope.

This Asian themed restaurant will cue in on and Asian twist to comfort food. Dale Talde, of Buddakan, put together a menu with an iceburg wedge with Chinese bacon and sriracha dressing and oyster-bacon pad Thai with Frank's Red Hot Sauce.



Casa Enrique: October. 5-48 49th Avenue (Fifth Avenue) Long Island City.

With a simple setting, Carole and Winston Kulok of Cafe Henri and Bar Henry in Manhattan are bringing regional recipes from southern and central Mexico including chipotle meatballs, pork adobo, and pozole.
