With the 10th anniversary of 9/11 having coming up this Sunday events throughout New York will be of a solemn nature. On Sunday, New Yorkers will take time out of their busy schedules to remember lost loved ones and reflect on the tragic happenings of that day that occurred just 10 years ago. Here we look at the various events that will remember 9/11 throughout the city of New York.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art: Artist Faith Ringgold discusses the creation of The 9/11 Peace Story Quilt. Created by Ringgold, along with Grace Matthews and New York City students, the quilt showcases a remembrance of peace that we all long for. The lecture is free and enables all to take in the beauty of the quilt and understand the story behind it. (September 11th, 1-4:30pm at The Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium)
Historic Richmond Town: The Historic Richmond Town will be displaying a unique video exhibit for all to see about the tragedy and devastation that was felt on 9/11. Created by the Staten Island Borough President and Historic Richmond Town, the video exhibit will be presented following a special 9/11 ceremony. It will then be featured on the first floor of the Historical Museum at Richmond Town. (September 11th, 10am-5pm at The Historic Richmond Town)
The New York Buddhist Church: There will be a Floating Lantern Ceremony to commemorate those that were lost and still are loved from the 9/11 attacks. The candles will be released into the Hudson River. During the ceremony there will be prayer, meditation, messages, musical performances and Buddhist chants for the victims of the 9/11 attacks, the earthquakes in Japan and for the Tsunami victims. (September 11th, 9am-9pm, South Side of Pier 40 on the Hudson River)
The Joyce Theater: The Joyce Theatre will be hosting two free, outdoor performances to commemorate the ten-year anniversary of 9/11. Presenting performances by Paul Taylor Dance Company, Jessica Lang, The Orchestra of St. Luke's, The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Limon Dance Company with Voices of Ascension the performances will pay tribute to the cycle of life, loss, and remembrance. (September 10th and 11th, 5pm, Nelson A, Rockefeller Park, Battery Park City)
The Stonehenge Yoga Month Series: A 90-minute Slow Flow Vinyasa yoga session will take place to honor and show our appreciation for the New York City Firefighters. An instructor from Reflections Studio will lead the yoga session and will feature live music from the September Concert Series. Bring your own yoga mat as none are provided. (September 11th, 5-7:30pm, Ritz Plaza Fireman's Memorial Park)
The Municipal Art Society of New York: The annual Tribute in Light series will once again showcase its beauty on September 11th. The Tribute in Light is assembled yearly on a roof near the World Trade Center site and illuminates the skies. Visit the website to see viewing sights near you.
