5 one-minute Kitchen Tasks

Your kitchen is the heart of your home: it is where you cook, congregate, and entertain. Making sure it's clean is another story entirely. After cooking meals and eating in-between-meal snacks, the grit and grime and general chaos can build up. It's easy to feel like there isn't time to continually keep your kitchen clean. However, there are a few ways to make a difference to avoid one huge mess. Try these five 1-minute quick and easy tasks to keep your kitchen looking neat and tidy.  1. Wipe down countertops with eco-friendly cleaners: The kitchen is your food preparation area so keeping it clean is essential. Germs and microbes can build up if you don't properly clean. Doing a quick wipe down of your countertops and wooden cutting boards will ensure that gunk and grime don't build up to a degree where it gets crusty and unmanageable. Using eco-friendly cleansers also helps the environment!

2. Make tomorrow's coffee: Mornings are tough. Either you're too tired or you just have too many things to do before leaving the house. Help yourself out by making the next morning's coffee the night before, and if possible, set it on a timer. It will easily be re-heated or just go for iced coffee the next day. It will save you time to do your other morning tasks!

3. Do a few dishes: Dishes pile up at all times of day: after breakfast, in between meals, and especially after a big family dinner. But doing them all in the dishwasher is not only time consuming to wait, but is a waste of water. Doing a few dishes at a time will not only dwindle your dish-washing duties but will help the environment in the long run as well. It's a win-win situation!

4. Toss out old produce: If you're like me, you like keeping a plethora of fresh produce to use in a variety of different recipes. However, it's easy to find yourself too busy or you forget you bought scallions to use for a specific dish. Go through your produce and toss out anything that has gone bad or use it in vegetable stock. Keep in mind that some foods make for great leftovers!

5. Organize your spice rack or utensil drawer: Keeping all your things in order and easily reachable while you're cooking will help you in the long run. You won't have to reach far or scramble to find that one whisk you always like using if you know exactly where it is.

Having a clean kitchen makes you more apt to use it as well as allowing guests and the rest of your family to feel comfortable hanging out in it. So next time you have a minute to spare, get to cleaning your kitchen. You'll thank yourself tomorrow.
