10 Foods that Drive Weight Gain and Loss

It should come as no surprise that to stay healthy you should choose a regiment of good diet and exercise. Avoid foods like potato chips and heavily sugared beverages that cause weight gain and eat lots of foods like fresh vegetables and fruit to help aid in weight loss. However, if you're the type of person to put off good eating or exercise until the next week (or month!) you could be doing your body more harm in the long run.

The New England Journal of Medicine published a report written by Harvard researchers that shows small changes in your lifestyle (such as lack of exercise and sleep) can affect your body's weight gain over the course of a long period. The study showed that 120,877 U.S. men and women gained an average of 3.35 lbs when they increased daily servings of bad carbohydrates like potatoes and lost an average of 3.93 lbs when their diets were boosted with fresh vegetables and fruit. Smoking, minimal exercise and sleep and even watching television can negatively affect your weight as well. Frank Hu, co-author of the study and Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, has said that "the idea that there are no 'good' or 'bad' foods is a myth that needs to be debunked."

According to the Harvard study, the top five foods to avoid weight gain are potato chips, potatoes, sugared drinks, unprocessed red meats and processed meats. Load your body up with vegetables, whole grains, fruits, nuts, and yogurt and get plenty of sleep and exercise if you want to stay healthy!
