Queen of Green: Remember These Memory Boosters

(Photo by Colleen Proppe) Lauren Von Der Pool’s hunger for healthy living began in Washington, D.C. where she grew up in a food desert—an environment totally lacking fresh, healthy options. When Von Der Pool realized that what was going on in her life and community was happening globally, she began to educate herself, her community, and the world about healthy living. A passionate humanitarian and artist, Von Der Pool dedicates her life to raising awareness about living a conscious, creative, green life.

This is the third in a series of guest posts by Queen of Green Lauren Von Der Pool about healthy and natural lifestyle tips.

If you’re like me, you’re probably busy managing your business and family while also taking care of your own physical and metal health. All this can become overwhelming so I appreciate all the benefits I get from mineral rich foods that help me stay sharp and focused!

Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant which helps protect neurons or nerve cells and keep your brain healthy. Raw almonds, sunflower seeds, peanuts and hazelnuts are high in vitamin E and can easily be snacked on while you’re on the go.

Kale, collard greens, spinach, and broccoli are good sources of vitamin E and folate. We love that! Folic acid helps break down homocysteine levels which may trigger the death of nerve cells in the brain. Go ahead and throw any of these lovely greens into your morning juices and smoothies (avocado is great here too) to get your creative juices flowing freely.

Also, let’s not forget the incredible power of smelling herbs. Rosemary has been shown to improve memory and cognitive function with its scent alone. It improves blood flow to the brain, improves mood, and acts as an antioxidant. You can blend rosemary essential oil with lemon, cypress or peppermint oil for a brain-boosting pick-me-up!
