WEEKEND COCKTAIL RECIPE

When the first green shoots of spring break through frozen soil, I like to break out a crate of strawberries and a bottle of mezcal for a refreshing cocktail. Tequila’s bad boy cousin, mezcal brings a smoky, savory element to this drink that works well with tart, fruity strawberries. Sip it while filling out March Madness brackets or starting a new gardening project.

March Madness Cocktail Recipe

2 ounces mezcal
2 ounces strawberry puree, recipe follows
½ ounce lime juice
½ ounce Campari
sprig of mint, to garnish

In a cocktail shaker, combine mezcal, strawberry puree, lime juice, and Campari with enough ice to fill the shaker. Shake well and strain into a low-ball glass filled with ice. Garnish with mint.

Strawberry Puree Recipe

1 pint of strawberries
½ cup sugar
½ cup water

In a medium pot, dissolve sugar in water over medium heat. Add the strawberries and mix to completely coat the strawberries in the syrup. Puree the strawberries and syrup in a blender.
