Even though I’ve been talking about an old-fashioned ice cream maker, this sort of recipe could be made in any sort of machine, from a bowl of ice to those fancy Kitchen Aid contraptions.
My great-great grandparents, down on the farm, used to make this as a custard. However, I prefer my dad’s modified gelato version.
Calories per serving: 307 per serving
Prep time: 2 hours or overnight
Cooking time: 45 minutes
Total time: up to 3 hours, or overnight
3 1/2 cups heavy cream
1 1/2 cups milk
1 1/4 cups sugar
1/2 fresh vanilla bean
1. Whisk all ingredients and let stand overnight.
2. Freeze according to machine instructions or fill an old-fashioned ice cream maker with mixture and crank until frozen.
