"Yes, Chef" Wins James Beard Award

james beard, yes chef, adam sachs Friday night brought out the culinary media's best and brightest for the James Beard Foundation New Media Awards. Held at Gotham Hall, the crowd was a teaser to the A-list chefs in attendance at Monday's James Beard Foundation Awards Gala. Martha Stewart sat at a table not far away from the likes of Andrew Zimmern (Congrats, AZ!), Thomas Keller, David Chang, Kevin Gillespie, Tom Douglas, and Hugh Acheson.

With wife Maya and Veronica Chambers (who co-authored "Yes, Chef") in tow, Marcus was seated with friends Adam Sachs (who took home two writing awards), Random House book editor Andy Ward, and travel writers Nilou Motamed and Peter Jon Lindberg, who all broke out in loud applause as Marcus's category was announced: "Yes, Chef", a Memoir, Winner of the James Beard Foundation Writing and Literature category.

Bringing Veronica on stage to accept his award, here are Marcus's words of thanks:

"Well, there are a couple of people I want to say thank you to...I want to start with my wife, Maya. She allowed me to just be in this book for a long time. Kim Witherspoon [Marcus's literary agent] was the first person to read "Yes, Chef" but also Susan, Andy and Veronica, here. "Yes, Chef" was not a good book until Veronica got in it. Thank you so much, Veronica. I want to say thank you also to the community and three families: my family, the community in the kitchen, and an especially big shout out to Harlem, because without Harlem this book would not have happened."

With the theme of "Lights! Camera! Taste!", the James Beard Foundation showed video clips of food scenes from the most beloved movies of all time. From unveiling il timpano in "Big Night" to feasting on "...liver with fava beans and a nice Chianti," from "Silence of the Lambs", guests dined on Carpaccio of Tuna and Beef, lamb shank and almond cakes.

A huge Congratulations to Marcus as well as Thomas McNamee and Tracie MacMillan who were nominated in the category with Marcus.
