It was an honor to deliver a commencement speech to Southern Vermont College's Class of 2011. SVC's students are bright and intellectually curious, and it was a pleasure speaking to them about what's ahead at this exciting time in their lives.Â
Themes of my speech included the importance of being grateful, the need for passion and question-asking, and of course, the insight that food can give you into other people's lives.
Every year graduates at SVC receive a parting gift of a book. This year's book was a copy of New American Table, and it is rewarding to know that as these now graduates start this new chapter of their lives, they will have my book with them.
SVC inspired me with their Campus Community Dinner Series, which teaches students and local families about the value of preparing and eating nutritional food. Not only is making healthy food important, the dinners foster conversation about the importance of eating well and eating together as a family. It's great to see a program like this at a school, which prepares these students to lead in good eating and wellness for the rest of their lives.
Thank you to SVC for awarding me an Honorary Degree at their 84th Commencement. I really enjoyed my time at the school, and look forward to returning someday.
