Study Links Junk Food to Infertility in Men

If teenage and college men want to become fathers some day, perhaps they should skip the soda and hold the fries. A Harvard study has discovered that consuming pizza, chips, and fried foods could cause men to become infertile. The common trend of binging on junk foods in your dorm room has many negative effects, some that are irreversible. Researchers from Harvard University and the University of Murcia state that nutrition can have a direct impact on the male reproductive system.

In the study, scientists asked 188 men ages 18-22 to keep a log of everything they ate for months. All of the volunteering men in the study were evaluated to ensure that no other factors would affect their sperm quality. The participants were placed in two different categories, "western" and "prudent". The former group ate a diet rich in red meats, refined carbs and energy drinks while the latter consumed a diet filled with whole grains, fish, lean meats, fruits and vegetables.

Analysis of sperm proved that those who ate foods high in trans fats and hydrogenated oils, like deep-fried and processed foods, fared the worst. The ones who jotted down that they ate foods such as cookies, cakes, burgers, and French fries had weaker swimmers in comparison to their healthier counterparts that maintained a more well balanced diet. Harvard experts say foods that have been shown to boost men's fertility include eggs, salmon, natural yogurt, nuts, seeds, berries, sweet potatoes, broccoli and asparagus.
