Yesterday was a grand day for me, since I had the pleasure of visiting The Children's Storefront school for a small cooking demo. The Children's Storefront is an independent, tuition-free school in Harlem, serving kids from pre-K to 8th grade. Their truly inspirational mission is based on the belief that every child deserves the opportunity for an excellent education, no matter their income level or neighborhood. Being located in the heart of Harlem, many kids attending the school come from lower-income families but  are still guaranteed a comprehensive education that works to empower them for a bright future. This particular food demo and being able to witness the school's garden and operations were truly proof of their great work.
Farmer Lee Jones joined me in presenting the kids with an informational demo on the importance of having a healthy diet and eating their recommended amount of vegetables every day. We each spoke to the 3rd and 4th graders about healthy eating and facts that they may have not known about being a chef and a farmer. The best part of speaking to the children was answering their many questions. They had amazingly complex questions! A few kids asked if Farmer Lee if his farm rotated their crops and asked me details of being a chef, as well as the dangers of eating artificial foods. I was astounded by their questions, interest, and interaction.
Chef Landon from Red Rooster joined me as we made a Rice and Roasted Vegetables dish for the kids to enjoy after the presentation. I was very proud to see all of them enjoy the food! It was truly an honor to pay them a visit yesterday and I look forward visiting them again, as well as doing more cooking demos for kids in the area.
